OpenID Authentication with TurboGears Identity

Identity Failure URL

Overview

When you protect a controller method via identity, unauthenticated or unauthorized users are redirected to the login page. Is it possible to make a difference between a user that is not logged in, i.e. unauthenticated (redirect to login page) and a logged in user that has not enough credentials, i.e. is unauthorized (redirect to a “access denied” page)?

Yes, you can, by setting an identity failure URL callable or by explicitly checking permissions and redirecting manually in your controller methods.

Setting an Identity Failure URL Callable

You can set the configuration setting identity.failure_url to a callable, which will get evaluated every time an IdentityFailure exception occurs. In this function you can then, for example, check

  • whether the current user is anonymous (not logged in)
  • or, what the error message(s) of the IdentityFailure exception are

and return different URLs depending on this information.

Example:

from turbogears import config, identity, url

def failure_url():
    if 'Maintenance downtime' in errors:
        return url('/maintenance')
    if identity.current.not_anonymous:
        return url('/access_denied')
    return url('/login')

config.update({'identity.failure_url': failure_url})

See the source code for module turbogears.identity.exceptions (see function set_identity_errors and class IdentityFailure) and module turbogears.identity.conditions (see class Predicate and function require) for particulars.

Manually Redirecting After Explicit Identity Checks

As a simpler, but less general alternative, you can test for the required permissions within your controller method and then just do the redirect manually. If you are just redirecting to a “Access denied” page, you probably don’t need to care about retaining request parameters across redirects, as redirecting via the IdentityFailure exception does.

Example:

from turbogears import controller, identity, redirect

class MyController(controllers.Controller, identity.SecureResource):

     @expose('bla')
     def bla(self):
         if not 'foo' in identity.current.permissions:
             if identity.current.not_anonymous:
                 redirect('/access_denied')
             raise identity.IdentityFailure

We have created a TurboGears example project, which uses a custom identity failure URL callable. It is attached to this page and can be downloaded here:
